In Talamuyo, a four-hectare farm seemed doomed to infertility. Its saline-sodic soil had thwarted every attempt at cultivation. Pablo Vivanco, its owner, summed it up clearly: “Here, you planted something and nothing grew.” Only black purslane and grasses could be seen, vegetation that tends to resist salinity, while weeds such as ataco and yuyo colorado, which do not thrive in saline soils, remained absent.
